How to Play Pickleball: A Beginner’s Guide to Pickleball Rules

If you’re new to the game, learning the rules of pickleball is the first step to enjoying this fast-growing sport. Like any other game, pickleball has its own regulations designed to keep play fair, balanced, and exciting—whether during casual practice or official competition.

In this guide, Olaben breaks down the fundamental pickleball rules in a simple, beginner-friendly way. By the end, you’ll know exactly how to play pickleball and feel ready to step onto the court with confidence.

1. Pickleball Court and Equipment

1.1 Court Dimensions

A standard pickleball court measures 13.4 m (44 feet) long and 6.1 m (20 feet) wide—similar in size to a badminton court. The net is slightly lower in the center (34 inches/86 cm) and slightly higher at the posts (36 inches/91 cm).

Each side of the court includes a 7-foot section near the net called the Non-Volley Zone (NVZ), or the kitchen. Players cannot volley inside this area, which makes strategy and ball placement essential.

1.2 The Pickleball Ball

The ball is made of lightweight plastic, around 7.6 cm in diameter, and has evenly spaced holes. Its design gives it a unique flight pattern and makes it easier to control compared to tennis or badminton shuttles.

1.3 The Pickleball Paddle

Pickleball paddles are usually made from fiberglass, carbon fiber, or composite materials. Weighing between 200–250 grams, they’re light enough for agility but sturdy enough for strong shots. Today’s paddles come in different shapes, materials, and price ranges so players can match their paddle to their style.

2. Serving Rules in Pickleball

  • The server must stand behind the baseline and serve diagonally into the opponent’s court.
  • The serve must clear both the net and the kitchen. Landing in the kitchen counts as a fault.
  • The two-bounce rule applies: the ball must bounce once on the receiver’s side and once on the server’s side before volleys are allowed.

This unique rule keeps the game fair and prevents the serving team from dominating early in a rally.

3. Scoring and Winning

  • Games are typically played to 11 points, and a team must win by at least 2.
  • Only the serving team can score points.
  • In doubles, each team gets two serving chances (one per player) before the serve switches sides.

4. Common Faults

Faults are mistakes that stop play and award the serve to the other team. Common examples include:

  • Serving into the wrong area or into the kitchen.
  • Stepping into the kitchen during a volley.
  • Hitting the ball out of bounds.
  • Failing to clear the net.

5. The Non-Volley Zone (The Kitchen)

One of the most distinctive pickleball rules: players cannot volley (hit the ball out of the air) while standing in or on the kitchen line. You may only step into the zone if the ball bounces there first.

This creates longer rallies, strategic “dink” shots, and exciting net play.

6. Serving Rotations

  • If the first server commits a fault, their partner serves next.
  • If both players fault, the serve passes to the other team.
  • Remember: only the serving team can score points.

7. Beginner Tips to Improve Your Pickleball Game

Learning the rules is just the start. To really enjoy pickleball, focus on a few beginner-friendly strategies:

  • Master the dink shot: Soft, controlled shots into the kitchen can outsmart opponents more than power hits.
  • Communicate in doubles: Call out shots to avoid confusion and build better teamwork.
  • Stay light on your feet: Quick lateral movement is key to covering the court.
  • Practice serves consistently: A reliable serve gives you a strong foundation to score points.

With consistent practice, these simple habits will quickly boost your confidence and performance.

8. Pickleball Etiquette and Sportsmanship

Beyond the official rules, pickleball is loved for its friendly and inclusive community. A few unspoken courtesies to keep in mind:

  • Call lines fairly and honestly.
  • Congratulate good shots—even from your opponent.
  • Rotate in during casual games to include new players.
  • Keep the energy positive: pickleball is about fitness and fun.

Respectful play makes every match more enjoyable.
